A group of us from our studio got together for a group critique before class on Monday. I got some good feedback on my spreads for little things.
On my night market spread I am going to add a hand holding a takeaway box of some description to one of the people walking for more of a sense of the market.
The outdoor movie spread is still having issues with a bit too much awkward white space. So I am going to flip the image at the top and move the text onto the left side of the margin so the popcorn can cross over the margin and fill some of the negative space.

I also came up with more cover ideas and I have one Im happy with.
I changed the title to 'A Capital of Culture' and I introduced the leg imagery from the spreads.

I went to a few different printers around the city, but Ink on Marion has proved to be the best option. It is the cheapest, plus its open on the weekends and its especially student friendly. I got a test print and all the colours came out superbly.

Cover Design

I have been experimenting with cover layouts, but at the moment I'm really not feeling it. The concepts I have don't feel connected to the rest of the brochure and the Wellington atmosphere/also aren't very inviting. I have a football tournament over the weekend, so I can just step away from the brochure and come back to it Sunday afternoon with fresh eyes.

Extra Spread

I began creating my extra spreads today. I am going to use Ekim Burger as a dinner place, Kaffee Eis on Cuba St for dessert and Macs Brewbar for drinks. I just sketched out a few ideas as thumbnails and then used my tablet to paint up the main item you would buy from the eatery. I want to create a similar layout to the rest of my spread. The main imagery used on this spread, will be carried into the map.

Tuesdays Development & Critique

After yesterdays critique I developed all my layouts, and then got some more feedback from Adrian and Karl. The spreads are now looking a lot more cohesive.
I need to change the text layout so it is consistent in style across the spreads. I also need to create small icons for the Salsa spread and the movie spread similar to the noodles in the night market spread. 
I got good feedback about the development of my map, however it was recommended that I add a couple of landmarks to help read the map. 
I still need to create my extra spread, so I was thinking of recommending locations to eat and drink before/after the activity, so I could add those locations onto the map as landmarks.

After todays lecture/class critique I have reviewed the map situation. I took away unnecessary information. I only have the main roads needed to travel between the destinations and the main landmark of the Cuba fountain. I used small icons to represent each location-not happy with the salsa icon, still need to think of something new.

After the class critique today I have a lot to do but it was very good feedback. The salsa spread used to be the strongest but it is now the weakest because the others now show a better sense of the destination.

Areas that are problematic:

I have to make the salsa spread more dynamic with more movement-using depth and scale.

On the outdoor movie spread, I need to show more age diversity.

The night market needs more subtle clues to the food-could have food scraps on the ground.

I need to try incorporate the imagery and the text more-like I did subtly in the market spread.

I need to scale down the key-it is some of the least important information.

The map needs to tie in more with the spreads-I am going to try take away more streets and only have the necessary information. 

Basically all the type needs fixing with more structure. The titles need to be left justified-the centred text feels like an invitation.

The critique also helped as we got to see everyone elses and give them feedback. I got some ideas on how to layout my type with the imagery.
